1970s – New Identity & Twinning

The early seventies saw success in the regional finals at Bristol on two occasions with consequent visits to the Fourth Section Championships in London.

In 1972 the band changed its name to ‘The Cirencester Band’ in an attempt at modernisation. However, the band is still often called ‘The Silver Band’ or ‘The Town Band’ by its supporters.

Since 1978 the band has been twinned with a German wind band, the Oelixdorfer Musikzug from Oelixdorf, a vilage on the edge of Itzehoe, Cirencester’s twin town. Itzehoe is about 35 miles north of Hamburg in the northern state of Schleswig‐Holstein.

Bandmasters: Reg Dutfield (1970‑76), Roddy Cartwright (1976‑78), John Jones (1978), Martin Gardner (1978‑79)

Bandroom: The Barracks, Cecily Hill (1970‑79)
